According to Medjool Dates, people in the Houston area eat more dates per capita than residents of other cities. Dates have no fat, no cholesterol and are loaded with potassium, copper, magnesium, vitamin B6, niacin, calcium, iron and vitamin K. They are high in antioxidants and contain more antioxidants than blueberry juice and only slightly less than pomegranate juice. Dates come from the date palm tree and are perhaps the oldest tree crop cultivated by man. More than 5,000 years ago, this valuable palm tree helped sustain desert and nomadic peoples of the Middle East and North Africa. Dates have been found in the tombs of pharaohs and kings. Originally from Morocco, the Medjool date was reserved for royal hosts and dignitaries. In the 1920s, a root disease threatened the existence of the Medjool date. In an effort to save the variety, the Chariff of Morocco gave 11 immature palms to the United States. The United States quarantined the trees to make certain they did not harbor any disease. They didn't and it is from these 11 palms that the Medjool date industry developed into what it is today in the United States.
