Just a few weeks ago, I had a really bad stomach bug. It wasn’t the flu, it was just uncomfortable stomach aches. I went to the doctor and it was nothing serious, so she prescribed some antacid and I was all better. I’ve always been one to opt to take the natural route instead of just turning to meds to solve everything. So I started researching digestion, in particular Steven Meyerowitz’s “Food Combining and Digestion”. This book was an easy to understand – no frills explanation of it all. This book led me to research raw foods, which are the easiest foods for your body to digest. I was just so interested in all of this new information I was finding out, it honestly seemed like my current diet, with some not-so major, but VERY important modifications.

I mean I had always considered myself a healthy eater for the most part, there was no veggie I didn’t like and I mostly stayed away from red meat. So what all was I doing wrong??

I could go on for a bit talking about what I’ve learned and changed over the last few weeks, but I want to keep it short and sweet and give you some good tidbits I’ve picked up along the way in blog posts to come.

So what’s lesson 1? – Food Combining

First and foremost, its important to learn that the order in which you eat and combine foods has a huge impact on your digestion, bloating, weight gain, nutrient absorption and much more.

If you are really interested I urge you to purchase the Food Combining and Digestion Book, but here is a quick visual. I know it may be a bit overwelming to look at it, but I promise you, look at it a few times for a few minutes and you’ll get the hang of it.

I have been trying to stick to this for about 3 weeks, and it doesn’t have to be 100%, I just try to be as close as I can. Just do your best. I can tell you that I have already seen great results! I wasn’t out to lose weight, but I am already down about 8 lbs, my tummy is flat and I feel great!

Few key rules

- Fruit digests the fastest (20 mins to leave the stomach), so eat fruit alone, and try to eat in the fruit groups outlined below.

- Eat your fruit in the first part of your day, then move on to longer digesting foods

- Non-starchy veggies can go with either protein, fat or carb – but only with one!

- Do not mix protein and carbs

- Do not mix protein and fats

Your stomach is like a lasagna, as you eat food, it piles into your stomach on top of each other. Some foods take longer to digest than others. You ultimate goal is to have food in your stomach/digestive path for as little time as possible. In order to do so, you need to make sure there is no other food in its way or it will sit in the stomach and ferment, and by the time it reaches your intestines you are digesting rotten food – ick! This causes all sorts of problems with nutrient absorption, stomach issues – the whole bit.
